2007-2008 Season
Defending District and Region
Team Champions!Alana Jimenez- 2008 Undefeated State
Champion!
*Coach Murray Update (2/10)*
The girl's team finished second behind distict foe Waller 137-133.
Katy had a chance to tie or take the lead when undefeated Maricia
Shelvin took the mat. Maricia was injured in her match and unable to
continue. All 6 Katy girls placed in the top 4. Championships were won
by Kathleen Farmer and Alana Jimenez, finishing in second were Christina
Cochran and Maricia Shelvin. Julie Stayton took 3rd and the most
surprising finish was by freshman Caroline Kuhn, who got her first two
pins of the year, and finished 4th.
These Tigers have two short weeks to train and be ready for the state
tournament in Austin.
*Coach Murray Update (2/3)*
The Katy High School Wrestling program advanced 12 wrestlers to the
Region Tournament next Friday and Saturday at the LMC.
The girls team has 6 Region qualifiers in:
Christina Cochran CHAMPION
Kathleen Farmer CHAMPION
Alana Jimenez CHAMPION
Maricia Shelvin CHAMPION (Her 2nd District title)
Caroline Kuhn Runner-Up
Julie Stayton Runner-Up
Placing 3rd for the Tigers was Nicole Mason. She just missed out on
qualifying, she had a lead going into the 3rd period when she got
reversed and pinned.
The girls team finished in second, losing to Waller by 7.5 points. As
usual, it was a battle of quantity over quality. Waller scored 45 points
from 5 girls who did not win a single match! Hopefully, with a larger
field at the Region tournament, Katy can reverse the finish and defend
their Region crown.

Katy Girls Knock Off Waller
Last Saturday the Waller girls wrestling team celebrated a state dual
meet championship. Several Katy wrestlers watched from the stands.
Tonight the Katy girls walked out of the Waller gym thinking about what
could have been as they defeated the Bulldogs 25-24. It was a 24-24 tie,
Katy wins on criteria.
Maricia Shelvin got things going as she opened up the night with a pin.
Katy 6 Waller 0
Caroline Kuhn followed that up with a well deserved decision to make the
score Katy 9 Waller 0.
The Tigers had to forfeit the 102 lb class, Katy 9 Waller 6.
Katy made a strategic move bumping up Christina Cochran from 110 to 119.
Waller weighed in a girl at 119, but decided not to wrestle her, Katy 15
Waller 6.
Nicole Mason put up a good fight, but it was not enough as the State
Bronze medalist from Waller pinned her, Katy 15 Waller 12.
Julie Stayton dropped a tough match to her foe from Waller. They have
had back and forth battles all year long and Waller came out on top in
this one with a pin, Katy 15 Waller 18.
Kathleen Farmer eeked out a one point win in a heart pounding match to
tie the score at 18.
Alana Jimenez took the mat knowing she would have to pin for Katy to
have a chance to win. Katy would forfeit the next match because they
have no wrestler at 185 so that basically made the score Katy 18 Waller
24. Alana had her opponent on her back for the majority of the second
period, but could not get the fall call and led 5-1 going into the third
and final period. A win would not be good enough, she needed the pin.
She came through for the team, putting her opponent away with only about
a minute remaining in the match.
With the score tied at 24, it would come down to criteria. Neither team
had been penalized so the next criteria is most matches won. Katy had
won 5 matches to Waller's 4 and that was enough to give Katy the
victory!
The varsity teams travel to Houston Westside on Saturday for the
Westside Great Eight tournament. Action begins at 9. This is the last
tournament before districts which will be at Taylor High School, JV on
Friday night, Varsity competition on Saturday.

The Lady Tigers romped over The Woodlands 30-18. Winners were:
Caroline Kuhn
Nicole Mason
Kathleen Farmer
Alana Jimenez
Maricia Shelvin
The girls are now 4-2 on the year.
The program travels to Waller on Thursday night. The girls will be
preparing for their biggest dual meet of the season. This past weekend,
District foe Waller won the state dual meet championship held at the LMC.
Waller defeated Cy-Ridge in the finals 27-27 winning on criteria.
Cy-Ridge prevented Katy from participating in the state duals with a
30-28 win over the Tigers last weekend. It should be a very exciting
dual to say the least. Wrestling will start in Waller at 6.
*Coach Murray Update (1/6)*
The Lady Tiger Wrestling team finished in 3rd place at the Lone Star
tournament this weekend. They were 2 points out of second place but well
behind tournament champion and 4X state champion Caprock.
95 lbs Caroline Kuhn just got back from a broken foot and unfortunately
did not win a match.
110 lbs Christina Cochran was unseeded but managed an impressive 3rd
place finish. She lost her opening round match to a returning state
champion and then rattled off 5 straight victories to claim 3rd.
138 lbs Julie Stayton was the second seed and pulled off an upset
victory pin in the finals. She fought off of her back for the entire 1st
period, regained her composure and came back to pin a state runner-up
from last year.
148 lbs Kathleen Farmer lived up to her #3 seed as that is exactly
where she finished. Kathleen's only loss came to a wrestler that
finished 3rd in state last year.
165 lbs Alana Jimenez continued to make it business as usual as she
pinned her way to a championship.
215 lbs Maricia Shelvin turned in (what I believe) was the most
impressive performance of the tournament. Maricia was seeded 3rd behind
last year's state champ and state runner-up. She knocked off the
runner-up in the semis and beat the defending state champ in the finals.
The wrestling Tigers will be back in action this Thursday at the LMC
for the 1st annual North Katy Duals. Katy will battle with Morton Ranch
and Mayde Creek for wrestling supremecy north of I-10. Come and check
them out.
*Coach Murray Update (12/11)*
The girls varsity team won
their THIRD STRAIGHT TOURNAMENT TITLE!!!! This time they did it filling

weight classes due to illness and injury. They only lost 1 match in the
tournament.
